My bones healed a lot faster when I was twelve. My buddies and I had little to no regard for our personal safety at that age, and riding our mountain bikes down a massive steep, in the middle of the night, with no light but the moon to guide our way seemed like a perfectly rational idea in those days. 13 years later I’m still pushing myself, but my inner maniac has quieted down a bit, especially when it comes to night riding.
That’s why today I use the Gator 605 bike light from Knog to light the path on my midnight excursions. Out of all the headlamps, flashlights jury-rigged to the handlebars with duct-tape, and bike lights I’ve experimented with over the years, the Gator 605 (Which retails for about $399) is the best I’ve ever used. Period. This stellar light blasts a hole in the darkness so bright that you can maneuver the sketchiest terrain like it’s high noon.
Honestly, this light can be seen from space.
You get duel 3-watt LEDs (which offer a three hour run time) and a sweet low-level LED that’s great when you just want to change a tire in the dark without blinding everyone within a 3 mile radius. Another great feature of the Gator 605 is that you can run the 3 beams at half or full power for all sorts of illumination combo’s. Which is great for saving power on those particularly long runs.
After years of struggling with makeshift light harnesses I especially appreciate the way the lights, controller, and battery pack all attach to the frame, it’s so seamless. A series of simple silicon bands stretch to allow you to wrap the light to almost anything, and the same goes for the controller and battery pack, which are attached to the light by a sleek coiled cable, as well.
If you like to ride when the lights go out, you can’t go wrong with the Gator 605 from Knog.
