Levi Leipheimer from the US takes bronze, and the silver goes to Gustav Larsson of Sweden, which is truly remarkable as no one (except maybe Larsson himself) expected him to finish anywhere near contention. A truly great story!

JUYONGGUAN, China (AP) — Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland won gold in the Olympic men’s road cycling time-trial Wednesday, adding to the bronze he took in the road race.

Cancellara, the two-time world champion in the event, completed the 47.3-kilometer (29.4-mile) course in 1 hour, 2 minutes, 11.43 seconds.

By the halfway point, Cancellara already had overtaken Stefan Schumacher of Germany - arguably his biggest rival who beat him in both the Tour de France time-trials this year - who started 1 1/2 minutes ahead of him.

Unheralded Swede Gustav Larsson rode an amazing race and at one point looked set for victory, but finished second, 33 seconds behind Cancellara.

“I hoped for a race like this. I knew the course suited me well. I rode the race of a lifetime, but he (Cancellara) is strong,” Larsson said.
