Considering that Bell helmets have been on the heads of more champions than any other company, you probably need to give them a look-see if you are shopping for new gear. Now more than ever, Bell is redefining style and function when it comes to brain-buckets for the mountain biking crowd.
Bell’s new “Variant” helmet fuses multiple styles and design concepts to come up with a helmet that is part rocket science, part rebel and all winner. Before we get into its technicals, we should mention that in addition to the standard colors, you can get it with camo and skulls.
How classic is that!?
The Variant helmet is produced in the same ground-breaking way all Bell helmets are, with in-mold injection. The process actually injects the protective foam into the outer shell while the helmet is still in the mold. This yields a solid, one piece helmet that provides a much greater degree of protection than two-piece systems.
The Variant comes with Bell’s patented GPS system (no, it doesn’t keep you from getting lost), which stands for “geared positioning system”, and allows for easy, one-handed adjustment of the helmet’s fit. It also continues to incorporate their successful Channeled Ventilation system.
While the Variant has all the classic components of the other Bell helmets, it has a much more “street” look on the outside. In fact, its looks and fit seem to be inspired by the skateboarding scene.
All in all, this is a great helmet for a mountain biker who likes a little bit of attitude and a lot of safety. At a recommended price of $100, you get more than your money’s worth.
