BEIJING (AP) — Straining for every breath, Kristin Armstrong crossed the finish line, then turned back to see the clock if the moment she’d spent so long training for had arrived.

Sure enough, it had - and a gold medal was finally hers.

Armstrong became only the second American women’s cyclist to claim Olympic gold Wednesday, winning the 14.6-mile time trial in 34 minutes, 51.72 seconds, nearly a half-minute ahead of Great Britain’s Emma Pooley, who set a blazing early time and dared the women’s best to better her effort.

Of the 20 who tried, only Armstrong pulled it off. And with that, she joined Connie Carpenter-Phinney - the winner of the road race at 1984 Los Angeles Games - as the only American women’s cyclist to know the feel of Olympic gold.
