I’m a wimp, I live in the Northeast and really don’t like riding in the cold. But now I’ll ride to work virtually everyday. Started this three years ago and boy do I miss it in the winter. Getting psyched and the 5-boro thing is looming, again. It’s funny at first everyone looked at me like I was crazy when I rode in, plus I’m chubby, but now there’s a good outcrop of bikes at work in the morning. Here comes Spring—thank God!!!

I came back to bicycling last summer as a fitness activity – resurrecting my mid-80’s American made Ross mountain bike. This spring, I suddenly realized that with a little organization, I could be cycling to work. I get 2 workouts a day, within the parameters of my cardio needs, and luckily I can shower and change clothes at work. If I can ride 3 or 4 times per week, I don’t need to worry about missing a workout occasionally.

It took a few tries to find a route that seems safe. I added about 1 mile to my trip to make it on safer roads, making the trip now 7.6 miles one-way. I learned, after getting drenched one morning, that I need to enclose my change of clothing in plastic inside my bag. If it’s raining in the AM, I am likely to drive my car instead.

Now I’m getting ready for colder weather – I guess I’ll have to experiment with clothing. I used to run in all types of weather, so I have some idea of how to dress. Guess I’ll need a bigger bag to stow clothing needed in the cold morning when I ride home in the afternoon. Luckily, I can make a few purchases with the money I’m saving on gasoline!

Thanks Chris! I’ve added a Bicycle Commuting, and I can tell you that we do have a couple of commuters on here, as I work with them.

Unfortunately, my commute is way too long to consider riding…
